Most employers face the same hiring issue: a serious lack of candidates who possess the necessary employability skills to be successful. There is an immediate and long-term need for local employers to have quality job candidates from which to choose.

This issue is being addressed by a local committee comprised of educators, employers and business organization representatives through a program called Your Employability Skills (YES). It was developed in York, Pennsylvania, and has a proven record of success. Graduates of the program must:

  • Have a High School Diploma or GED;
  • Achieve a reading and math level of grade 9.0 or higher;
  • Earn a score of 21/50 on the Wonderlic test;
  • Pass a six panel drug screening test;
  • Attain a 95 percent or better attendance record; and
  • Complete 120 hours of coursework covering communications, teamwork, health and safety, personal development, technology, quality and business tours.

Many employers already have endorsed the YES program, knowing that it will save them time and money in the hiring process. Strong employer support is critical to the success of the program. At no time will you be asked for funding. However, we are asking employers to give preferential hiring consideration to students who successfully complete all requirements of the YES program. By doing so, students will have a powerful incentive to obtain the certificate, and employers will have better information on which to make hiring decisions.
